Is it just me or are these the Top 5 Meals at Camp Aranzazu?
Written by: Megan Keim, Camp Aranzazu Activity Leader
Camp Aranzazu’s kitchen team has prepared some of the best food that I have ever tasted and deserves the highest recognition for fueling our bodies with delicious meals after a day full of play and fun activities. While there was a menu posted each week of all the tasty meals Ms. Norma and her team planned to whip up, I enjoyed the element of surprise and would wait until it passed around the table to find out what I was about to dig into. Check out these top 5 meals from Camp Aranzazu that will leave your mouth watering!
1. Chicken Fried Steak with Mashed Potatoes and Gravy
The most classic southern cuisine that transports you right back into your Mamaw’s kitchen. I could have eaten this meal every day and would never get tired of it. The breading on Camp Aranzazu’s chicken fried steak is like no other. It is flavorful and seasoned to perfection then fried to be the perfect level of crispness that puts this meal above all others. The mashed potatoes were always buttery and creamy, and the gravy would tie everything together to make this dish really stand out. This was the best meal to fill your belly up after a fun filled day.
2. French Toast with bacon and eggs
Talk about a breakfast made for royalty! When I would see the French toast brought to the table I knew that it was going to be a good day. Each piece of toast was perfectly fluffy and so, so delicious. I liked to top mine with the fresh strawberries from the fruit bar. YUM!
3. Spaghetti and Garlic Bread Sticks
There is almost nothing better than a hot plate of spaghetti and garlic bread. The perfectly cooked noodles and the flavorful sauce hit the spot every time. Myself and others would try to grab the last breadstick as fast as possible from each other because of how delicious they are, and there were a few times where I saw campers wrapping them up and putting them in their pockets for later! This was a meal that I looked forward to and hoped was on the menu every single week.
4. Chicken Wings and Egg Rolls
Before camp, I had never tried a chicken wing before. As a picky eater, I was nervous to see a plate of chicken wings on the table for the first time before I took a bit. I am so glad that I did because this was a life changing experience for me, where I would hope that they would have chicken wings on the menu every week. The chicken was so flavorful and crispy every time that this meal was served, and the egg rolls were fried to perfection. This was another meal that everyone would reach for the last egg roll or wing, and campers from other tables would chase each other around begging for the last flat on the tray! Not only was I able to challenge myself with trying a new food, but I discovered a new favorite meal.
5. Beef Enchiladas
The beef enchiladas were such a tasty meal, and the salsa was some of the best that I have ever tasted. Each night that these were served, almost every pan would go back empty. These enchiladas were crispy and smothered in the most delicious sauce and always extra cheesy, which is the best way to serve an enchilada. Somehow, they always managed to still be warm when you would dive back in for a second helping.
